Recruiting Department
Research and Development Group for Seafloor Observatory, Research and Development Center for Earthquake and Tsunami Forecasting (FEAT), Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG)

Job Description
The Research and Development Group for Seafloor Observatory, Research and Development Center for Earthquake and Tsunami Forecasting (FEAT), Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG), is recruiting two postdoctoral researchers who will be engaged in the research project "Understanding the state of the seismogenic zone by seafloor observation (FY2019-2025, PI: Takane Hori)" in Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) mid- to long-term plan.

[Research Description]
Each postdoctoral researcher will be mainly responsible for one of the following research topics, although their interrelation may allow for participation in both topics:

1) Research related to the development and data analysis of a real-time seafloor geodesy observation system using tiltmeters and fiber-optic strain meters developed and installed in boreholes by JAMSTEC.
1a) Instrument development and testing at the Kamioka Mine and analysis of the test data.
1b) Integrated analysis and interpretation of observation data collected by the Dense Oceanfloor Network System for Earthquakes and Tsunamis (DONET) observation network and from seafloor borehole observatories. This activity may require the development and application of new data analysis methods.
1c) Installation of seafloor instruments and borehole observations. This activity will require the improvement of related observation methods.

2) Research on fiber-optic sensing techniques including distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and other methods currently under development by JAMSTEC.
2a) Implementation of fiber-optic sensing in the field, and analysis of the obtained data describing earthquake, tsunami, and seafloor crustal deformation. This activity will require the development and application of new data analysis methods.
2b) Development and application of efficient data processing and analysis methods for multidimensional, high-density, large-volume fiber-optic sensing data.

These research activities will be conducted at Kamioka Mine, various submarine cable landing stations, and seafloor observatories in the Nankai Trough, among other settings. The successful applicants will participate in the fieldwork, including shipboard research cruises. This research will be conducted in cooperation with various research institutes and instrument developers, providing multiple opportunities for joint research projects.
