The Earthquake Mechanics group at University of Michigan is looking for one or two graduate students to study the physical mechanisms of earthquakes and faulting processes using numerical simulations and observational methods. One possible research direction is to understand the effects of fluid and fault zone structure using fully dynamic earthquake cycle models. The group is also developing new techniques to image fault zone structure and analyze earthquake rupture processes. The student will work in a collaborative environment and get exposure to a variety of expertise such as seismology, geodesy, Earth’s structure, lithosphere dynamics, and tectonics in the department (https://lsa.umich.edu/earth/research/geophysics-tectonics.html).

Students with B.S. or M.S. degree in geophysics, geology, engineering, physics or a closely related field are all welcome to apply. Programming experience and familiarity with numerical methods are recommended. We will provide students with full financial support. Applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Yihe Huang (yiheh<at>umich.edu) to discuss the research project and life at University of Michigan. Applicants can find more information about Dr. Huang’s research at http://sites.lsa.umich.edu/yihehuang/. More general information about the graduate student application is available at https://lsa.umich.edu/earth/graduate-students/application-info.html. The application deadline for Fall admission is January 7, 2022.
