The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) invites applications for a 4 years PhD position in marine seismology. The position is at the Geophysics Section, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), and is part of a project on the seismo-acoustic sensing of the changing North Atlantic Ocean and its climate.

Description: The North Atlantic Ocean sustains some of the most extreme weathers and sea states, that fluctuate with the changing storm tracks in response to climate variability. Ocean wave generated seismo-acoustic noise (microseism) contains valuable information about storm activity, sea state and atmospheric processes. In addition, the associated Rayleigh surface waves, coupling the water column and the solid Earth as they propagate from the deep ocean to land, are sensitive to changes in the ocean that are affecting their propagation, such as ocean water temperature. The project aims to investigate how the unique complementary information present in the seismo-acoustic noise wavefield can provide valuable insights on the changing North Atlantic environment and its long-term atmosphere-ocean-land coupling.
Through the project, the PhD candidate will build a 3D seismo-acoustic model that covers the North Atlantic region. He/she will then use the model to perform numerical simulations to further characterize the observed seismic wavefield in the North Atlantic, in particular connecting deep ocean microseisms events with land observations. With the integration of real seismic data from the North Atlantic seaboard with 3D simulations, the candidate will map the seismo-acoustic depth sensitivity of Rayleigh waves to acoustic velocity fluctuations across the ocean's water column and develop novel remote sensing capability for the "seismic" storm tracking in the North Atlantic. In addition, the PhD candidate will be involved in the collection of new offshore seismo-acoustic data and the use of distributed acoustic sensors (DAS) technology in order to further study the noise wavefield recorded at the seafloor and develop new techniques for continuous high resolution remote monitoring of deep ocean processes from land.
The student will be supervised by Florian Le Pape and co-supervised by Chris Bean.
Duration: The PhD position is funded for 4 years.
Salary: €18,500 annual stipend.
Start date: As soon as possible
Qualifications: Applicants are expected to be within 4 years from the degree that in their country, or in the country of appointment, gives access to a PhD. They should have a background in Earth Sciences or Physics, with a strong analytical and computing skills, as well as good English proficiency.
