Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Data Services is looking for a Data Engineer to join our team.
We are a small, scientific consortium with a global reach! We operate the largest repository of seismological data dedicated to supporting researchers worldwide. The work we perform and the services we provide have a significant and direct impact on earthquake and other geoscience research.
You will be primarily responsible for managing various aspects of data capture, archiving and curation. Working directly with the Chief Architect, you will be part of a team that collaborates with developers to evaluate and identify optimal solutions to better serve our community.

SUMMARY of RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Data Engineer (Capture) is responsible for managing different aspects of data capture, archiving, and curation. The incumbent will participate in a team to ensure that data ingestion and handling systems are operating continuously and as expected. Responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of necessary data handling software and systems, as well as the development and maintenance of systems to monitor and alter on data flow exceptions. The incumbent will make sure all procedures and software developed for performing their duties is documented in the shared documentation system and/or checked into a source code repository. Also performs code review with other data engineers and administrators to assure clarity, correctness, and compliance with IRIS’ security procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain data capture, archiving and curation systems such as data collection clients, data capture servers, relevant monitoring systems, etc. which could include any of the following:
Collaborate with engineering and development teams to evaluate and identify optimal solutions, driving improvements to system availability, scalability, reliability, and security.
Communicate with data providers internal and external as needed to maintain data flow.
Modify and improving existing systems.
Develop and maintaining relevant systems in accordance with best practices.
Ensure efficient functioning of data capture and flow to the internal repositories in accordance with company security policies and best practices.
Regularly review existing systems and make recommendations for improvements.
Participate in active monitoring of IT security throughout the organization and making recommendations for improvements to systems, participate in support coverage during off-hours.
Actively monitor relevant systems and networks to ensure data security and integrity.
Assist with development of necessary levels of documentation, in accordance with the companies’ IT standards.
Assist with making sure all software developed for performing repetitive functions has been checked into a source code repository.
Stay abreast of trends in pertinent computing-related areas to support planning and systems optimization.
Participate in building the technology roadmap for the organization including architecture, design, and implementation planning.
May interact with community members relative to supported projects
Interact with suppliers and business partners for areas of expertise and project assignments.
Other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and five (5) years of relevant experience, preferably in a scientific/technical organization.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS: (Knowledge, Skill and Ability Requirements):
Knowledge of software containers and development experience in Linux-like operating systems.
Experience with various cloud-based platforms and technologies.
Experience with networking configuration relevant to data flow.
Knowledge of Git along with deployment tools like Terraform and/or Ansible.
Knowledge of Nagios and other platform monitoring frameworks.
Working knowledge of software development tools such as wikis, trouble ticketing systems, continuous testing/integration.
Ability to apply the software lifecycle to projects.
Ability to generate user documentation in a wiki-based system and use of source-control repositories.
Ability to take initiative to learn new skills, current best practices and technologies and then apply these to projects while encouraging them throughout the organization.
Ability to write organized and comprehensive documentation on projects.
Ability to make technical decisions based on previous experience and research.
Experience deploying and managing operational environments and networks into commercial cloud environments or data centers.
Ability to learn how to deploy and support open source and commercial software packages within the cloud and local data center, for example service-like applications like GitHub.
Experience with networking as it pertains to IP protocols relevant for data collection.
Ability to communicate clearly with other team members to ensure tasks are completed on time with best practices applied.
Ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders to establish requirements and implement feedback.
