A postdoctoral position is available at the Center for Earthquake Research and Information, University of Memphis for two years with potential for extension contingent on performance and availability of funding.

The postdoc will work in the earthquake physics group at CERI under supervision of Dr. Goebel. The postdoc is expected to contribute and advance the seismic and optical imaging capabilities (e.g. acoustic emission analysis and particle tracking) within the earthquake physics lab at CERI. The postdoc is expected to design and run laboratory direct-shear experiments and analyze seismic data - after a reasonable training period. A background in laboratory rock mechanics, acoustic emission analysis, digital image correlation, rupture dynamics modeling, machine learning or observational seismology will be beneficial. The postdoc will be fully integrated in the broader research environment at CERI, and is encouraged to work on multi-disciplinary problems in areas such as observational seismology, earthquake triggering, fault structure, hydrogeology, earthquake source parameters, induced seismicity and rupture dynamics.

The ideal candidate should have the ability to connect observational, laboratory and theoretical results across many scales and is encouraged to take advantage of the interdisciplinary research environment at the UofM, that includes CERI, Civil Engineering, Earth Sciences and the Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering Research.

The University of Memphis is located in Memphis, TN, a vibrant, friendly, and affordable major city in the Mid-South. Memphis is home to essential Civil Rights histories as well as multiple healthcare, logistics, and technology headquarters. The city boasts a rich and diverse culture. It is the cradle of both Blues and Rock ‘n Roll and has a strong historical legacy. The city is located near the New Madrid and Eastern Tennessee seismic zones and home to CERI’s extensive seismic network.

The successful candidate will receive a salary commensurate with experience but not less than $50,000 in the first year. The candidate needs to have an authorization to work in the U.S. and is requested to verify Ph.D. completion in geophysics, structural geology, engineering seismology or a related discipline within 2 ½ months after being hired.

The preferred start date is August 1st, 2022, but later dates may be possible. Applicants should upload: 1) CV; 2) statement of research interest - 1-page max. (as ‘Other Document’); 3) a list of three references (email and phone number), and two exemplary publications. Candidate screening will start May 15th and continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to Dr. Goebel (thgoebel<at>memphis.edu). Applications can be submitted online at: https://workforum.memphis.edu/postings/30959
