Are you an undergraduate student outside the United States interested in a part-time internship in seismology or geodesy with a U.S. based mentor during Summer 2022?
The IRIS International Development Seismology Committee (IDSC), which serves the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (https://www.iris.edu/hq/) and University NAVSTAR Consortium (https://www.unavco.org/) science communities, is piloting a new virtual summer internship program for international undergraduate students with interests in seismology and geodesy. Interns will take part in the Seismology Skill Building Workshop (https://www.iris.edu/hq/workshops/2022/01/ssb_3), which will include a module on geodetic data this year, and will also undertake a research mini-project in geodesy or seismology. The total time commitment for the internship is 15 hours per week over a period of 10 weeks. Interns will be paired with two mentors from the IRIS/UNAVCO community for the summer: one current graduate student and one current faculty member or senior scientist. Interns must also have requested mentoring from a local professional in the geosciences who is familiar with resources at their home institution. Interns will meet with each of their mentors 1-2 times weekly via Zoom and will work with their senior mentor to accomplish their research mini-project. Interns will be provided a stipend of $270/week for 10 weeks ($2700 total) for 15 hours of work per week. Funding will also be provided for interns to purchase high-speed internet access and to support virtual attendance at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, the AGU Virtual Poster Showcase, or another virtual workshop.
The goals of this program are to enable international undergraduate students who might not otherwise be able access research opportunities in seismology and geodesy to 1) participate in the Skill Building Workshop, with a stipend and support provided for high-quality internet access, 2) undertake a meaningful research project in seismology or geodesy on a part-time basis, 3) gain access to high-quality mentorship and support from scientists in the IRIS and UNAVCO communities, 4) get help in preparing to apply for graduate programs, and 5) make connections and form networks in the IRIS and UNAVCO science communities. This program is part of the portfolio of IDSC activities that aim to expand international engagement and capacity building in seismology and geodesy.
We are particularly interested in supporting students who have limited research or internship opportunities in seismology and/or geodesy in their home countries, and/or who would not otherwise have the opportunity to carry out an independent research project under the supervision and mentorship of a scientist from the IRIS or UNAVCO science communities.
Students who apply must be available and willing to commit 15 hours per week to the internship between the dates of May 30 and August 19, 2022.
