The Nevada Seismological Laboratory (NSL) at the University of Nevada, Reno is hiring Development Technicians as part of our field operations team. NSL development techs build and maintain station infrastructure, power systems, data backhaul communication systems, and instrumentation for the NSL network of 200+ seismic stations and ~100 wildfire cameras in Nevada and Eastern California. The position provides the opportunity to work outdoors, travel to remote locations in Nevada and Eastern California, significant professional development opportunities and educational benefits, while supporting foundational seismological and wildfire research. These are grant-funded, full-time, permanent positions.



Interested applicants can apply at the Development Technician 2 level (described below), or with less experience at the Development Technician 1 level in an underfilling role that will auto-progress to the level of Development Technician 2 after achieving satisfactory performance and meeting eligibility requirements.

Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Development Technician 2 for the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. Under the supervision of the Manager, Field Operations and under the mentorship and the general supervision of higher-level Development Technicians the Development Technician 2 would receive training in the procedures that go into building large-scale electronics circuits and power systems that operate the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, Fire Camera and Seismic Networks. Primary responsibilities include the following: maintaining and calibrating remote seismic and fire camera stations; assisting with the repair and adjustment of IP microwave radios, power supplies/solar systems, data recording devices, and various other seismological instruments; performing bench repairs, testing, modifications and adjustment of equipment; assisting with the fabrication of electronic systems and assemblies; and other duties as assigned. ***This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding.***



Required Qualifications

Development Tech 2: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in electrical or mechanical engineering or related field and one (1) year of experience in the fabrication, maintenance, calibration, repair and modification of a variety of electrical, mechanical and/or computerized equipment and computer systems; OR Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in electronics or related field and two (2) years of experience in the fabrication, maintenance, calibration, repair and modification of a variety of electrical, mechanical and/or computerized equipment and computer systems; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.


Development Tech 1: Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in electronics or related field and one (1) year of experience in the fabrication, maintenance, calibration, repair and modification of a variety of electrical, mechanical and/or computerized equipment and computer systems; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.



Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.



Additional Requirements

* A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
* This position requires carrying heavy loads, climbing on communications towers, frequent work in rugged and extreme conditions; exposure to radiological, chemical/biological, and other hazards; requires intense safety trainings.
* Candidate must be a US citizen to obtain clearance to work in Federal secured areas.

Schedule
This position requires working a variable schedule; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. This position travels up to 80% of the time.

Compensation Grade
Development Tech 2: Grade 33 (Entry, Step 01 $22.60/hr)

Development Tech 1: Grade 29 (Entry, Step 01 $19.13/hr)



In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
