Deputy Director, Infrastructure

Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Data Services is searching for a Deputy Director, Infrastructure to join our team.
IRIS is a small, scientific consortium with a global reach. The work we perform and the services we provide have a significant and direct impact on earthquake and other geoscience research. We operate the largest repository of seismological data dedicated to supporting researchers worldwide. The Deputy Director leading the Infrastructure section of IRIS’s Data Services (DS) directorate is responsible for managing the computational platform(s) and related services supporting a geophysical data management system that is primarily cloud-based, but that will also have some on-premises systems. The scope includes database and administration, system administration, cloud service administration, incident response and licenses. These responsibilities entail developing and implementing processes for sustained operation of technical infrastructure, documenting procedures for timely incident response, creating budgets necessary to fulfill the section’s assignments; supervising the section staff: managing consultant agreements; monitoring the quality of the work performed; purchasing equipment as required; and identifying, assessing, and managing risks.
Deputies are members of the DS management team and provide their input and opinions to other Deputies and the Director in the day-to-day management of the directorate.
Required qualifications
Experience maintaining and managing operations of cloud platforms and other infrastructure
Experience contributing to the development of infrastructure for a primarily cloud-based platform
Experience maintaining and managing corporate IT, including email services, networking, staff computer resources, and on-premise systems for data capture.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science/engineering or equivalent professional experience
Eight years of experience in management of staff
Demonstrated experience maintaining long-term cloud-based infrastructure
Knowledge of the management and maintenance of on-premise systems
Experience procuring services and equipment from vendors
