Position Description

The Department of Geosciences in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) invites applications for up to two tenure-system faculty positions in Geosciences at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, within the theme of environmental earth science, to support our new program in Sustainable Earth Systems Science and natural resources. Sustainable earth systems science includes all aspects of the complex dynamic interactions between the geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. Environmental earth science includes all aspects of clean energy (net-zero and renewable), clean water, the near-surface ‘critical zone’, and climate change. Areas of desired expertise include geophysics, geology, hydrology, geochemistry and geobiology.

Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate level courses in the core curriculum and in the candidate’s specialization area. In addition to teaching, the position requires an active agenda of research and publication as well as service in the UT Dallas and/or professional community. A demonstrated ability to integrate a broad range of geological, geophysical, hydrological, and biogeochemical methods for research and teaching is preferred, including quantitative field or laboratory measurements, surface and subsurface investigations, and modern theoretical, computational, or data analytical approaches. The successful candidates will be expected to develop an internationally recognized research program with an absolute commitment to secure external research funding. Opportunities exist to collaborate and build upon our current strengths in energy, water, and other natural resources, as well as earthquakes, tectonics and geohazards; priority areas for government and industry research funding, and future student career employment opportunities.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD in Earth Sciences or equivalent and demonstrate their commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service, which includes a strong commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. All candidates are expected to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals of diverse backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. The appointment commences August 2023. A doctoral degree is required prior to joining; postdoctoral experience in academia, government or industry is highly desirable.

The Department and School

Geosciences is proud to be one of the original founding departments at UT Dallas and is now entering a rebuilding growth phase following a decade of retirements; the successful candidate(s) will have a unique opportunity in helping to shape this future. The School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics consists of six departments: Geosciences, Physics, Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Mathematical Sciences, and Science/Mathematics Education. UT Dallas is a relatively young and rapidly rising Tier 1 institution and is rated as one of the best universities to work at in the US. UT Dallas attracts highly talented and diverse students (>200 National Merit Scholars per year) and is situated in the Dallas Fort Worth metropolitan area that is a national hotspot for economic growth.

Application Instructions

Applicants should upload the following:
· cover letter and full curriculum vitae summarizing their interests and their qualifications for the position, including past and/or anticipated future efforts to advance diversity, equity and inclusion;
· statement of teaching philosophy describing (at a minimum) their conceptualizations of teaching and learning, teaching and assessment methods, and how their teaching philosophy and practices foster (or will foster) equitable and inclusive learning environments;
· statement of research interests describing (at a minimum) past, present, and future research and grant funding, and how they have fostered (or will foster) equitable and inclusive research environments;
· a writing/publication sample (optional); and
· reference letters for at least three academic or professional references.
Reviews will commence as completed applications are received and will continue until the position is filled or the search is closed on November 15, 2022. Priority will be given to completed applications received by October 31, 2022.
