Job Description
The Earthquake Forecasting Research Group, Research and Development Center for Earthquake and Tsunami Forecasting (FEAT; Director: Takane Hori), Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG), Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), is recruiting a Researcher, Researcher (II), or Postdoctoral Researcher to engage in the following research project.

[Research Description]
The Earthquake Prediction Research Group is engaged in the research and development of a three-dimensional seismogenic zone subsurface structure model to be applied in simulations of earthquake generation, seismic wave propagation, and tsunami generation, as well as data analyses associated with crustal activity and the prediction of interplate locking/slipping states using data assimilation methods.

This position is open to individuals who will be responsible for developing challenging and original research themes as follows:
(1) Development of an earthquake prediction system for seismogenic zones around the Japanese Islands, data assimilation using seismic and crustal deformation data acquired by terrestrial and seafloor observations, and the prediction of interplate locking/slipping states. Analysis methods for the implementation of this system will require development and improvement.
(2) Development of a forecasting method that takes into account subsurface structure uncertainties, and analyses to facilitate the dissemination of forecasting results including these uncertainties.
(3) Accumulation of new knowledge on the physics of earthquake occurrence and seismic activity, and promotion of joint research based on advanced research methods through collaboration with other researchers in the fields of mathematical information and computational science within and outside JAMSTEC.

Detailed descriptions of the research conducted at FEAT, IMG, are available online at

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
