Dear Colleagues,

My group (Seismology and Machine Learning) in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at UC Berkeley is looking for a highly-motivated PhD student interested in the interdisciplinary field between Earth Science and Data Science to promote scientific discovery and better assess natural hazards through data-driven science. Potential research topics include machine learning/deep learning for seismic signal discovery, large-scale seismic data mining, scientific machine learning for simulation and inversion, etc. Students will be encouraged to engage in collaborations with research groups in the Berkeley Seismology Lab (https://seismo.berkeley.edu/), Earth and Planetary Science, and other disciplines include Data Science and Computer Science (https://data.berkeley.edu/), Civil Engineering (https://geotechnical.berkeley.edu/), and Berkeley National Lab (https://eesa.lbl.gov/).

We welcome students with backgrounds in geophysics, physics, computer science, geoscience, or a closely related field. Experience in computer programming and seismic data analysis is preferred. Applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Weiqiang Zhu (zhuwq<at>berkeley.edu). More information about our group can be found at (https://ai4eps.github.io). The application deadline for the 2023-2024 academic year will be December 1, 2022. GRE scores are optional. International applicants from countries where English is not the official language are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). More general information about the graduate student application is available at (http://eps.berkeley.edu/graduate/admissions).

Best regards,
Weiqiang Zhu
