The IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center (https://www.passcal.nmt.edu) at New Mexico Tech (https://www.nmt.edu) is seeking applicants to fill two full-time positions of Staff Scientist/Polar Field Engineer. The Center is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is operated by NMT professional staff. In association with researchers and students from around the world, Instrument Center staff engage in hardware/software development and training associated with earthquake, volcano, glaciological, and other geophysical research, handle logistical support and fieldwork for Earth science experiments, and maintain the world’s largest academic pool of research seismological instrumentation.
JOB SUMMARY
The Polar Field Engineer provides support for high-latitude geophysical experiments. The Polar Engineer will split their time between the lab, office, and in-field. Duties include: developing specialized equipment for cold, dark environments; testing and preparing polar hardened systems and equipment; serving as a technical liaison for PI experiments; up to 4 months supporting the installation, maintenance, and decommission of stations in the Arctic and Antarctic; producing and maintaining documentation related to Polar support and systems; and training members of PASSCAL’s user community.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Associate's degree or completion of program 18+ months after high school, focusing on electronics, technology, or related sciences plus 3 years of directly related experience. Bachelor's Degree in Geophysics or related science, or engineering (Mechanical, Structural, Electrical or similar core engineering). Seismological or other science field experience. Electrical, mechanical or structural engineering design experience. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to attain a valid passport.
Desired Knowledge: Data telemetry network design and support experience. Data analysis experience. Scripting and programming experience. Portable DC power systems and power budget calculations. Data acquisition systems for rugged field environments.
