The Alaska Earthquake Center https://earthquake.alaska.edu/ is hiring two
re-envisioned leadership positions as part of the center’s response to
recent growth. The center is a cooperative environment where projects and
operations are executed by well-empowered collaborative teams. We are a
mission-driven organization set within the 400-person Geophysical Institute
https://www.gi.alaska.edu/ at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
The center’s
values https://earthquake.alaska.edu/job-opportunities emphasize employee
flexibility, the open sharing of different perspectives, a respectful
inclusive environment, and a commitment to serving Alaska and Alaskans with
strong applied science. Career growth and professional development are
expected and encouraged. The university offers an attractive work
environment and strong benefits including retirement and health insurance,
generous leave policies, and waived tuition for courses. We especially seek
applicants with diverse (broadly defined) backgrounds that are historically
underrepresented in STEM fields. Application review for both positions
begins January 2. Questions can be directed to Brad Lobland, Director of
Operations (balobland<at>alaska.edu). Or connect with us at AGU (booth 2137).

Communications Manager

We seek an individual with a passion for communication to manage our public
engagement team. The team engages a variety of audiences online, in print,
and in person to share earthquake and tsunami science, foster natural
hazard safety awareness, and provide essential information during emergency
events. The duties of the Communications Manager include supervising staff
and supporting their creative growth, guiding internal and external
communication strategies, coordinating visual resources, serving as a
communications expert within the management team, and representing the
center to media contacts and partner organizations.

Field Operations Manager

We seek an individual with the talent to manage a well-coordinated team of
a half-dozen professional staff. The team’s diverse skills include
instrumentation, engineering, remote field operations, networking, and new
technologies. Together, the team is responsible for the health and
improvement of the 250 field monitoring stations the center operates. This
network https://earthquake.alaska.edu/network of stations spans every
corner of Alaska and streams data types including seismic, GNSS,
infrasound, and weather. These data underpin the mission of the Earthquake
Center and support the missions of numerous state and federal
organizations. A background in logistics, engineering, or geoscience is
ideal, but not required. The duties of the Field Operations Manager include
mentoring and supervising other staff, planning and executing safe field
logistics, and coordinating efforts to track the performance of remote
monitoring stations. The position requires strong project management skills
and a talent for team leadership. During the summer field season
(May-October), this position provides support and oversight for multiple
field campaigns operating across Alaska in remote conditions. This position
offers extensive opportunities for travel in Alaska.
