Distributed Acoustic Sensing

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a potentially transformative technology in the geosciences and engineering. The rapidly increasing interest in DAS arises from its use in continuous arrays that can be kilometers in length while providing spatial resolution of meters and frequency response from millihertz to kilohertz. This mailing list provides a forum for discussion on all topics related to DAS technology including: applications, installation, data acquisition, handling and processing of data, engineering and scientific technical development, and advertisement of upcoming events, workshops, meetings, or other opportunities in the DAS community.

Dear DAS RCN, The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) is looking for a postdoc with DAS knowledge. NGI is investigating DAS for infrastructure (e.g. dams) and natural hazard monitoring (e.g. quick clay slides, snow avalanches, etc.). The postdoc would be supervised by me and work in the Remote Sensing and Geophysics group within the Natural Hazards directorate at NGI. We will focus on ambient seismic noise monitoring (e.g. coda wave interferometry) and relating velocity changes to geotechni… [more]

Dear All, We have been offered to deploy our own fiber‐optic cable besides one telecom company deployment that will connect a town to a village (about 8 km long). We expect to use it for seismic monitoring purposes with DAS. As far as we know they will use a standard method i.e. dig an 8 km long trench, bury a pvc duct and insert the fiber‐optic cable in it. The question is: Would it be better to insert our cable in the pvc duct besides the telecom one or to have it buried directly to the gro… [more]

Hello DAS Mailing List, Steering Committee Members, and Working Group leads, We held the DAS RCN Community Forum "Community Resources/Facilities" on April 14th and the recording is now posted under the Events tab of the DAS RCN website: https://www.iris.edu/hq/initiatives/das_rcn. Thank you to all who responded to the survey and participated in the discussion. A draft white paper is available here for further comments and for noting available DAS equipment: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1… [more]
