Hi all, In SEED blockette 52, the information described in field 6 is the "Instrument dentifier". This is a free form string up to 50 characters. Historically this has been used to identify the sensor and sometimes the sensor and data logger. In StationXML there is a much richer set of fields to describe equipment installed at a site. For example both the Sensor and DataLogger have fields of Type, Description, Manufacturer, Vendor, Model, SerialNumber, InstallationDate, RemovalDate, and C… [more]

Hi As a short term work around for cases of invalid xml from the IRIS FDSN Station ws, I have put up a modified version of the FDSN StationXML schema that aims to make small invalid items be valid. This allows a validator to get past common, but unimportant places where the XML is invalid (like responses of LOG channels) and allow the validator to say that the rest of the xml is ok. Just thought that this might be useful to others, you can find it here: https://github.com/crotwell/QuirksStati… [more]

Hi For quite a few channels, for example: http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?level=channel&network=II&starttime=2007-04-04T00:00:01.000&station=ABPO&channel=LOG the fdsn station ws returns something like: ... <Sensor> <Type>Console Log - Error Log</Type> </Sensor> <Response> <InstrumentSensitivity></InstrumentSensitivity> </Response> </Channel> My guess is that you have no response information at all in the dataless since this is a LOG channel. But in… [more]

Hi I have had quite a few SOD users report trouble that ends up being related to how the magnitudetype parameter is used by the FDSN Event web services at IRIS and elsewhere. The trouble is both that the acceptable values of this are unspecified in the FDSN documentation and that specific implementations often differ from common seismic usage. For example, suppose a user wants events with a moment magnitude (Mw) >=6. There is an event on 2015-01-07 that satisfies this (I think) in the IRIS web… [more]
