Over most of the last 30 million years, the hot and ductile (easily deformed)
mantle underneath the Basin and Range Province has pushed the surface up.
As a result, the area has partially collapsed under its own weight and stretched
apart. This process may have come to an end, and relatively little stretching
is still going on, mostly concentrated in the western and eastern edges
of the Basin and Range Province.
