The Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory (ASL) installs, operates, and maintains the US Geological Survey component of the Global Seismographic Network (GSN), the backbone of the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS), as well as a number of regional seismic networks. Along with operating these networks the ASL ensures the quality and integrity of the data. GSN and ANSS data are used for real-time seismic monitoring by the USGS National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC); for tsunami warnings by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Tsunami Warning Centers; for nuclear test monitoring by the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and the US Air Force; and for research on earthquake processes, Earth structure, and other geophysical problems by a broad community of international users.

The purpose of this position is to provide software engineering and support to the ASL.

Responsibilities of Position:

In support of seismological networks, individual will lead in the design, development, and maintenance of computer applications for station state of health monitoring, station command and control, data acquisition, seismic data analysis and visualization, including the suite of software tools used for station configuration, testing, and azimuthal analysis.

Primary duties include development, maintenance, and upgrade of application software used on field systems as well as locally run data quality programs. This includes implementing, managing, and maintaining station configurations for data acquisition; configuring, testing, and deploying new data acquisition units, monitoring system operations, configuring station-specific calibration sequences, reconfiguring stations for optimal operation, and developing systems and software to manage the configurations.

Serve as technical lead on projects related to configuring, testing and troubleshooting embedded Linux computers essential to the acquisition and delivery of critical data in real-time 24×7 systems.

Qualifications
BA/BS in mathematics, engineering, computer science, or other related field with two years’ experience.

Attributes/Skills Required:

Familiarity with the complete software life cycle. Demonstrated understanding of technical documents describing systems and processes and an aptitude and willingness to keep technical skills current by learning new languages, operating systems, hardware, tools, and technology. Relevant training in software design and development. Ability to work with people with diverse technological, language and cultural backgrounds. Must be able to work collaboratively and effectively communicate with a team of programmers and scientific and technical user groups.


Experience with object-oriented programming, including Java. Experience in scripting such as Perl or Python. Experience with version control software such as Git or Apache Subversion (SVN). Expertise in minimal embedded Linux operating systems including boot process, system architecture, and run-time monitoring. Experience with TCP/IP (network) applications, asynchronous I/O, GUIs. Experience with digital signal processing. Experience with web development.
