A large aftershock from the February 27th Magnitude 8.8 earthquake
occurred on the subduction zone plate boundary at the Peru – Chile
Trench where the oceanic Nazca Plate subducts beneath the continental
South American Plate. This is one of the largest of over 200
aftershocks larger than Magnitude 5 that have occurred in the region.
A short 5 slide PPT has been prepared with additional details about
the aftershocks and a discussion of the recent reports of cities in
Chile moving to the west.
