Dear IRIS Seismographs-in-Schools teachers,

Last February I learned that I have a brain tumor of the most
aggressive type -- glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Senator Ted
Kennedy has a similar tumor, diagnosed in
May. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/glioblastoma_multiforme ;
http://www.boston.com/news/health/blog/2008/05/what_kind_of_br.html; and
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24730317/

My wife, Jan, is adding entries every few days to a blog, in case you
want more details on my condition and/or treatment.

Kay Wyatt and Tammy Bravo, whom a number of you already know, have
agreed to take over my work with IRIS, including training at AS-1
workshops and answering teachers' questions about their seismic
systems via E-mail. They will also maintain a small number of spare
parts that can be swapped out with a school's system. Too frequently
the "black boxes" develop a problem that can only be corrected by
swapping in a known-good black box. Kay and Tammy can be reached via
a new email alias for Seismographs in Schools Help:

sishelp<at>iris.edu

However, I also encourage you to send questions to the irised
listserve (irised<at>iris.washington.edu) so that other teachers can
benefit from the answers to your questions.

I have really enjoyed working with IRIS's Seismographs in Schools
Program. The participating teachers are some of the best in the US
and are a joy to work with.

Happy New Year and All the Best for 2009.

John
