Summary: Seismologists’ tools of the trade are ever expanding as new
technology is adopted to efficiently analyze increasing amounts of
continuous data. It can be overwhelming for those new to the field, and
for those well ensconced, to sort out the pros and cons of available
software packages. This webinar will provide an overview and brief
tutorial on two commonly used software packages available through IRIS.
Seismic Analysis Code (SAC) has a long history of use in the US and
provides a powerful set of analysis tools and a common data format for
time series data. Antelope is a system of modules designed to acquire,
distribute, archive and process environmental data. IRIS, through
agreement with Boulder Real Time Technology, provides Antelope to member
institutions for research purposes and to streamline the acquisition and
archiving of seismic data. These software packages can be used together,
and with other programs such as Matlab, to view, manipulate and analyze
seismic and other time series data. The webinar is intended as an
introduction to each package from a user’s perspective. Tutorials will
focus on how SAC and Antelope can be used to organize and analyze local
earthquake data recorded by temporary seismic experiments and how to
integrate temporary network data with EarthScope Transportable Array and
regional broadband seismic network data. The slides will include links
to other, more complete self-guided tutorials available online.
