Please consider joining us for this discussion about the creation of a Subduction Zone Observatory (SZO). The SZO concept is a multi-disciplinary observatory stretching the length of the eastern Pacific, from the Aleutians to Tierra del Fuego and providing a comprehensive suite of onshore and offshore observations to understand the entire subduction zone system. IRIS and UNAVCO have both included in their recent 5-year proposals a conceptual description of a joint SZO as a possible follow-on activity that would build on the success of EarthScope. There was a well attended discussion of the SZO concept at the EarthScope National meeting in May, and we would like to continue the discussion on Monday afternoon during AGU. The goal of this discussion is to reach a wide-range of disciplines that may be interested in an SZO, and to stimulate further development of the idea, engagement of the international community, and to identify strategies to move the concept forward. Attendee!
s are encouraged to present one or two slide pop-up presentations to any part of the discussion. A summary of the agenda is included below.

1) Overall concept

2) Science motivations
The goal is to identify and articulate the multidisciplinary science gains that an SZO can yield.

3) Existing or planned observational activities that SZO should interact with / leverage / build on
We encourage participants to identify those existing or planned activities that an SZO can interact with.

4) Identification of international partnerships to build on or stimulate
We especially encourage participation from those who can represent activities or interests of countries along the eastern Pacific or other countries who are engaged in projects in this region.

5) Observational communities
Identify the observational communities that could / should be part of a SZO initiative.

6) Next steps
An international workshop is an obvious next step. We need to identify the connections, people, and synergistic workshop opportunities, and (most importantly) start to form an organizing team that can put together a workshop proposal and organize a workshop.
