We hope to fill this position as soon as possible. A summary of the position is found immediately below:
-----
The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science (CEOAS) invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE),12-month, fixed term Faculty Research Assistant (Geophysical Technician) position. Annual reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean (while this is a “fixed term” appointment, we anticipate the successful candidate will be reappointed each year, with no specific time limit attached to this position). The Geophysical Technician works within the National Geoelectromagnetic Facility (NGF). Appointment is full-time (100%), although a part-time appointment of not less than 50% may be considered, depending on successful candidate's availability.
The NGF at Oregon State University (OSU) is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported center for instrumentation and electromagnetic (EM) investigations on scales ranging from the deep mantle to the shallow near surface. At present, the NGF operates nearly 90 long-period and (ultra) wideband land EM instruments, and is currently completing a 2nd generation marine combined EM/seismic instrument. This position will work with another Technician to assist with lab and fieldwork activities.
The Technician plays a key role in the operation and maintenance of the United States National magnetotelluric instrument and data acquisition activity under the NSF EarthScope/USArray program, other NSF programs, the Department of Energy and other external funding sources. Tasks include maintaining and operating the OSU Magnetotelluric (MT) instrumentation center/NGF. Additional field-based research or electronics/software design activities can also be supported, dependent upon the interests and qualifications of the candidate.
The portfolio of projects supported by the NGF, at this time, include imaging of the electrical conductivity structure of the crust and mantle and ionospheric electrical current systems in the interior of Alaska; monitoring an Enhanced Geothermal at Newberry volcano in central Oregon; operating the EarthScope MT Arrays sweeping from west to east across the continental United States; imaging the segmentation of the Cascadia continental margin and the distribution of fluids from the down-going plates in the MOCHA onshore-offshore MT experiment; imaging the details of the magmatic system in an audiofrequency magnetotelluric (AMT) project in the southern Washington Cascades volcanic arc. The NGF is actively involved with offshore EM field measurements in support of the emerging wave energy power industry, and EM surveys using NGF-designed instruments will be carried out offshore Oregon and Hawaii in 2014 and 2015. The NGF provides support to non-OSU investigators by providing instrumentation to them on a cost recovery basis.
The position is Competitive / External - open to ALL qualified applicants
Posting Date 03-07-2014
For Full Consideration Date 03-24-2014; Closing Date 04-07-2014
Recommended Full-Time Salary Range: Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
In order to receive full consideration for this position, your application must be received by 3/24/14.
For additional information please contact: Sarah Haluzak, 541-737-5194, shaluzak<at>coas.oregonstate.edu.
OSU is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
