*Alaska Station Specialist - USArray Transportable Array
(Anchorage, AK)
*

The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS,
www.iris.edu) seeks a Station Specialist to engage in the effort to
install EarthScope USArray Transportable Array (TA) stations in Alaska
and western Canada (www.usarray.org/Alaska) over the next several years.

The Station Specialist will divide their time between remote field
locations and the Array Operation Center (AOC) in Anchorage, reporting
to the Station Deployment Coordinator and TA Management. This position
is responsible for conducting detailed monthly schedules of
Transportable Array station deployment activities and making the best
use of the resources needed to accomplish each deployment by careful
planning and execution in the field. Resources include equipment (i.e.
construction tools and materials, station hardware), personnel, and
logistical support. This position requires extensive communication and
interaction with IRIS and associated contractor personnel to plan and
maintain efficient, safety conscious, and team-oriented field operations.

Additional tasking for the Station Specialist will depend on
demonstrated skills and interest, but will fall into one of three
following general areas: 1) Logistics coordination---plan air support
and field accommodations for personnel and work with aviation
contractors on scheduling fuel supplies, etc.; 2) Field operations
management---direct movement of materials between the field hubs and
remote installation sites and report on daily activities; 3) Field crew
lead---oversee and report on site construction/installation at remote
locales.

Overall, this will be a unique opportunity to apply scientific knowledge
and engineering skills to the creation of an unprecedented seismological
observatory. The ideal candidate will have at least a bachelor's degree
in geophysics or a related subject and several years of experience
deploying and operating seismometers or doing similar technical and
team-oriented fieldwork, particularly in isolated environments. Strong
communication, negotiation, and problem solving skills are vital to the
position. Familiarity with winter survival practices, emergency
first-aid, bear awareness training, and use of firearms are plusses.
IRIS is a geographically distributed organization, and the Station
Specialists will work with the Station Deployment Coordinator as well as
TA management located primarily outside of Alaska. This position
includes frequent travel via small aircraft, driving, and strenuous
field activities in rugged settings.

We offer a competitive salary and excellent benefits. Candidates should
submit a letter of interest, a resume highlighting pertinent work
experience, and the contact information (name, phone number, and email)
for at least three references. To apply, these should be sent
electronically to hr<at>iris.edu with the subject line "Alaska TA Station
Specialist". The positions are available immediately and will remain
open until filled. More information is available here:

Applications will be reviewed beginning on June 16, 2014.
