Abstract: Seisan is a software package for the routine processing of
earthquake data. The development of the software was started by JH in
the late 80s due to the need for a processing tool of the new digital
seismic network in Norway. The software was designed to be also useful
for others and soon developed into a toolbox that was used at a number
of mostly local seismic observatories. Today, Seisan is very widely used
around the world mostly at local seismic networks, volcanic
observatories and by individual researchers. It provides all essential
tools needed for the basic processing of earthquake data to obtain the
location, magnitude, source parameters and fault plane solution. In
addition it has a number of programs for basic research and export
support for some standard research software. Data are stored in a simple
directory based database system, which has allowed for consistent
long-term storage of waveform and parametric data. Seisan is very open
in the sense that it can work with data from a wide variety of
acquisition and processing systems. Seisan can for example read
continuous data from a seiscomp or bud archive system. One can also use
Seisan on data and response files extracted from a SEED volume. It is
also rather simple to extract data from Seisan for processing in another
system or for usage in research. Seisan works on the standard operating
systems Microsoft Windows, Linux, Solaris and MacOS. It is distributed
with the entire source code, a manual and training material. Seisan may
not have the bells and whistles of some more modern systems, but due to
its efficient ways in the processing presents an attractive and robust
solution for many.
