The main function of the Seismic Research Centre is to monitor seismic and volcanic activity in the English-speaking Eastern Caribbean and to provide accurate and timely advice to the governments of the region on all matters relating to these subjects. Persons interested in this post are strongly advised to visit our website at http://www.uwiseismic.com to learn more about the seismic and volcanic activity in the Eastern Caribbean and the operations of the SRC.

Qualifications/Experience
Applicants should have a good degree in an Earth Science or relevant Engineering field (e.g. Civil Engineering) and hold a postgraduate qualification such as an MSc or PhD in a relevant aspect of Seismology or Earthquake Engineering. Candidates should preferably have experience in the operation of “strong motion” seismograph networks and the preparation of seismic hazard maps. Familiarity with the microtremor technique in Microzonation using the Tokyo Sokiushin equipment would be a definite asset. Prior work experience in a similar institute is highly desirable. The candidate must be amenable to working with extra-institutional consultants on various projects.

Special Expertise/Area of Concentration
Earthquake Engineering

Special Responsibilities
(i) Seismic hazard assessments: This activity provides seismic hazard assessments for the territories of the Eastern Caribbean. These hazard maps form the basis for seismic provisions used in building codes and the design of structures.
(ii) Microzonation: Selected cities and towns throughout Trinidad and Tobago are earmarked for Microzonation analysis.
(iii) Outreach activities: An important component of the job is involvement in public education (Education & Outreach) activities. These include lectures to schools, the public and special interest groups on various aspects of Seismology in the Eastern Caribbean and assisting the Education Officer by providing information for use in SRC’s Outreach Program.
(iv) Assist with the day-to-day running of the SRC: This involves responding to real or perceived threats of seismic and volcanic activity in any of the islands monitored by SRC. It also involves assisting with the monitoring program, assisting with consultancy work done by SRC and generally using professional skills to enhance SRC's efforts in mitigating the effects of seismic and volcanic activity in the Caribbean.
(v) Research related to earthquakes in the region: The successful applicant will be required to develop a research program, in collaboration with other staff members, using data collected by the network and related agencies. The nature of this research will depend on the individual's specific research background and experience, but its overall aim will be to improve our understanding of the effects of earthquakes in the Caribbean with a view to supporting the goals of sustainable development.
(vi) Strong Motion network: The successful applicant will be required to play a leading role in the development of a strong motion seismograph network in the Eastern Caribbean.
(vii) Other Activities: This can involve such activities as teaching and general participation in University life.

NOTE: Members of staff are required periodically to deliver teaching in either or both of these modes – distance education as well as face-to-face.

Personal Attributes
The post requires frequent travel to all of the islands of the Eastern Caribbean and fieldwork that is sometimes strenuous. Applicants should be physically fit and in good health. Good inter personal and communication skills are necessary; of particular importance is the ability to communicate science to non-scientists. A good command of English is essential. A valid driver’s permit, or willingness to acquire one rapidly, is essential.

Further information and requirements
We intend to fill the position at the level of Research Fellow which requires the candidate to have a Ph.D. in a relevant area of study (Seismology/Earthquake Engineering). Candidates for the post who do not have a Ph.D. can apply, but will be appointed at the level of Junior Research Fellow and must pursue an active research programme leading towards the award of a Ph.D. if they wish to remain in the post.
