Dear Collegues,
we would like to invite you to submit an abstract to the AGU 2016 special
session
*S004:Capturing the complexity of site amplification*
*Session ID#:* 12890
*Session Description*:
Site amplification produced by local geological conditions plays a key role
in seismic shaking hazard assessment and mapping. Although the topic has
received significant attention over the past decades, a number of
scientific and engineering issues are still unsatisfactorily answered and
the latest data often raise new questions. This session will focus on
improvements in the scientific understanding of site effects, and we invite
contributions that include new observations, numerical modeling, and
geophysical imaging of sedimentary basins and valleys. Of particular
interest are studies in areas of high topographic relief, and we encourage
discussion of the contrasting role of topography vs. material
characteristics in amplification of ground motion. In addition, the session
encourages discussion of innovative methods of site characterization
besides Vs30, as well as contributions from diverse fields of application
covering soil nonlinearity, slope instability, liquefaction, fault zone
cracks, spatial variability of ground motion, and near surface attenuation.
*Conveners: *
Marta Pischiutta, National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Rome,
Italy
Anna E Kaiser, GNS Science-Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences
Ltd, Lower Hutt, New Zealand,
Jan Burjanek, Swiss Seismological Service, ETH Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland
Sebastiano D'Amico, University of Malta, Msida, Malta
All the best,
Sebastiano D’Amico for Marta Pischiutta, Anna E Kaiser, Jan Burjanek
