A position is available for a Field Technician in the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. We seek an aspiring technician who will provide technical support to operate the Lamont-Doherty Cooperative Seismographic Network (LCSN, URL:http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/LCSN).
Activity includes preparation, installation, operation and repair of seismic equipment used to monitor earthquakes. Field work to average 25-35% of the time, seasonally (that is, 5-10 days a month, less in winter, more in summer) in eastern U.S.

Duties include:

Maintain existing seismic stations in NY, NJ, CT, PA, DE, MD, VT, NH and OH. Service trips as scheduled and whenever problems occur. Effort includes installation, maintenance and minor repair of electronic equipment for earthquake monitoring: seismometers, Ethernet radios and power supplies (including batteries and solar panels).

Make GPS and radio antenna coaxial cables, Ethernet, seismometer and various cables. Minor repair and testing of electronic equipment: seismometers, recorders, Ethernet radios.

Maintain drum recorder and assist other Seismology program as needed.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, geophysics or related field required. Related work experience preferred. Experience in Internet communication and Linux is required. Hands-on experience will include broad range of electronics with good theoretical capability leading to understanding of equipment function. Adequate soldering skill to make various cables for radios, seismometers and GPS receiver required. Good command of spoken and written English required. Must be physically capable of working in the field in isolated locations – to walk up and down steep hills while carrying up to 50 pounds. Must be able to load/unload, and to drive a pickup truck for field work, and operate generator and other simple machinery.
