Lead Quality Proc Analyst/Auditor
Job ID: 00330305
Location: Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory, Albuquerque, NM, US

About the Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory (ASL):

We install, operate, and maintain the US Geological Survey component of the Global Seismographic Network (GSN), the backbone of the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS), as well as a number of regional seismic networks. Along with operating these networks, the ASL ensures the quality and integrity of the data.

GSN and ANSS data is used for real-time seismic monitoring by the USGS National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), for tsunami warnings by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Tsunami Warning Centers, for nuclear test monitoring by the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and the US Air Force, and for scientific research. Our scientific research on earthquake processes, Earth structure and other geophysical problems is used by a broad community of international users.

Job description:

KBRwyle Technology Solutions, LLC, under contract to USGS at the ASL, is seeking a Seismic Data Quality Control (QC) Analyst to review seismological waveforms and other digital time series data for quality control to detect abnormalities in the data. Duties include:

* Identifies possible station health issues through the analysis of the seismic waveform data. Provides this analysis to field engineering personnel and aids in the determination of station failure cause, and aids in providing recommended repair actions.
* Uses particle motion and power spectral density data for co-located sensor comparisons.
*Analyzes noise correlation data from various sensors to isolate problems and confirm real noise sources. Suggests corrective actions for instrumentation problems based on these findings.
* Compares synthetically generated earthquake waveform data against primary and secondary sensor data to ensure equipment is functioning correctly and metadata allow for accurate deconvolution.
* Determines calibration schedule for GSN stations and provides coordination of calibrations with data users, including the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in Vienna.
* Performs routine maintenance by remotely logging into stations to provide seismic system centering, lock/unlock, and diagnose problems and calibration.
* Categorizes problems using the RT ticketing system to verify reoccurring problems (trends) suggesting procedural changes or corrective actions.
* Performs acceptance testing of returning field equipment for operational suitability.
* Tests newly acquired instruments for waveform quality and establishes a baseline noise level.
* Ensures quality of all mockup data prior to field deployment.
* Performs in-house maintenance on seismometers when necessary.
* Provides backup field engineering support on remote deployments, as needed.
*Works with US Geological Survey (USGS) scientists to develop new instrumentation standards and procedures in order to verify that equipment is properly tested and categorized prior to deployment to a field station.
* Maintains/debugs existing programs for functionality, such as that for plotting synthetic waveforms, using Perl, Python, MATLAB, shell scripting.
* Provides specifications and guidance to software developers to improve existing programs.
*Assists government employee research projects by providing data analysis, produces charts/figures (using GMT or MATLAB), and provides peer review of results, as a part of publishable papers and presentations.
* Performs pre-deployment data quality evaluation to ensure that field teams fully understand the issues to be addressed while deployed.
* Works with deployed field teams to review incoming data streams to validate quality; uses data quality and system operation knowledge to advise field teams of possible causes of system problems in the more extreme cases; provides final analysis and advises site leadership to authorize field team departure from the field.
*Performs analysis of station, post visit data and verifies new metadata is correct so that data users are confident of quality data.

Job requirements:

* Ability to analyze digitized data for the purposes of recognizing seismic events and for recognizing proper seismic station operation.
* Ability to work with data in different frequency ranges produced by a variety of sensors.
* Experience using PERL, Python, general shell scripting, MATLAB, UNIX, Linux, MacOS, Windows, SAC, SQL, and PQL seismic data analysis tools.
* BS in Geophysics or related field and 15 years of related experience. In lieu of degree, 18 years related experience will qualify.
* US Citizenship.
