Job number: SUPP103264
Contract type: Open ended contract staff
Working pattern: Full time
Salary: £25,298 - £28,453
Closing date for applications: 4th July 2017

The Geophysics Group in the School of Earth Sciences has grown rapidly in the past 10 years and is now one of the largest in Europe. The Group has led field experiments on most continents in a range of geologic settings, and in some of the harshest environments on Earth. These experiments have provided insights into the Earth’s deep interior, from the crust to the core, and how it has evolved over geologic time. Furthermore, a new geophysics teaching degree programme started in the autumn of 2016.

The Group owns and operates a wide breadth of geophysics equipment, which enhance its research and teaching, and the role holder will be responsible for the maintenance, cataloguing and training in the correct use of this equipment, ensuring that any fieldwork carried out is done so efficiently and safely. The research of the Group generates large datasets which needs to be analysed with bespoke software; the role holder will support these IT and data management needs. The role holder will provide broad support for the research and teaching activities in the Geophysics Laboratories, supporting undergraduate and graduate students and academic staff, ensuring that the labs are used safely and have the provision needed for the research.

You will be educated to BSc degree level in geophysics, quantitative geology, physics or engineering, or have substantial work experience in a relevant role. We are looking for candidates with a good working knowledge of/experience in geophysics and related lab and fieldwork, proficiency with UNIX operating systems, programming language(s) (e.g. Python, Fortran and Matlab) and software development tools, experience with processing geophysical data and a knowledge and understanding of Health & Safety requirements for the laboratory & field environment. You should also have good organisational, communication and time-management skills, with the capability to problem solve. You will be able to work in a team but also have experience of working/responding independently and dealing with unforeseen problems and circumstances.

Please note that 80% of the salary of this post is core-funded (open-ended contract) with 20% grant-funded (initially for 1 year).
