Dear colleagues,

Please consider contributing to the following AGU session to address local
and regional-scale research questions related to the western Tethyan system
(i.e. Mediterranean plus Zagros) from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Confirmed invited speakers include Douwe J.J. van Hinsbergen and Donna L.
Whitney.

*Session Title: *T001*: *Alpine-Mediterranean Investigations: Geology,
Geophysics, and Geochemistry

*Session Description:*

The Alpine-Mediterranean region represents a unique opportunity to
investigate lithosphere deformation in an intricate interplay between plate
subduction, collision, and back-arc extension. Active research for this
region ranges from the microscopic scale to the lithosphere and upper
mantle, addressing fundamental issues regarding the vertical and horizontal
tectonics including surface uplift/subsidence, metamorphism, controls on
seismicity and its distribution, and causes of the rich variety of magmatic
and volcanic products.

In this session, we intend to bring different viewpoints together on the
evolution of the western, central, and eastern Mediterranean, as well as
the Iranian plateau. We invite contributions from all disciplines and
scales in the earth sciences including, but not limited to, field geology,
tectonics, geochemistry, petrology, geophysical methods, seismology,
sedimentology, geodynamic modeling, geodesy, and marine geology.
