T040: Tectonics of the Gulf Coast Region: Lithospheric Structure and What Lurks Beneath the Salt (Session ID#: 23158)

Session Description:
The U.S. Gulf Coast lithosphere was shaped by two rifting episodes (~530 and 220-165 Ma) and ~310 Ma continental collision. Evidence of these events is now buried beneath thick sediments and salt, both onshore and offshore. The region’s complex geologic history strongly influenced Mesozoic rifting and resulted in a wide rift zone. This complex evolution makes the region an ideal place to study how geotectonic events and lithospheric structure interact to shape, stabilize, and reactivate the Gulf coast passive margin and its lithosphere. We invite a broad spectrum of contributions from observations to modeling, and from academic and industry geoscientists to help understand the structure and evolution of the buried lithosphere of this region.
