Our research group (https://cmse.msu.edu/directory/faculty/min-chen) is looking for new PhD students to work on research topics in computational seismology, more specifically in multiscale seismic imaging and full waveform inversion related method development and applications. The qualified students should have B.S. or M.S. in geophysics, physics, applied mathematics, or computer science. Depending on their individual background, students are welcome to apply for PhD programs either through the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering or through the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Michigan State University. Please find below the detailed information of the available PhD programs. Please note that each department has different application deadlines and required materials.

1. Michigan State University’s Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE; cmse.msu.edu) is currently accepting applications for its PhD program. This program provides its graduates with a broad and deep knowledge of the fundamental techniques used in computational modeling and data science, significant exposure to at least one application domain, and the opportunity to conduct significant original research in algorithms and/or applications relating to computational and data science. More information on this program can be found at cmse.msu.edu/phd-program. The deadline for application for next year’s cohort is January 2, 2018, and application information can be found at cmse.msu.edu/apply.

2. Michigan State University’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES; ees.natsci.msu.edu) is also currently accepting applications for its PhD programs. The department's PhD programs emphasize the study of the biological, chemical, and physical processes of the Earth and the application of knowledge about these processes to solve applied and basic problems. More information can be found at ees.natsci.msu.edu/academics/graduate. The deadline for application for next year’s cohort is December 1, 2017, and application information can be found at ees.natsci.msu.edu/academics/graduate/application. Information regarding financial support through research and teaching assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships can be found at ees.natsci.msu.edu/academics/graduate/scholarships.

Please forward this message to any students that might be interested. Questions from students regarding the potential PhD research topics in computational seismology can be directed to Dr. Min Chen (chenmi22<at>msu.edu).
