*THE EAST AFRICAN INSTITUTE FOR FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH*

The EAIFR is a Category 2 UNESCO institute affiliated with the
University of Rwanda and is closely

associated with the ICTP (see
http://www.ictp.it/programmes/outreach-activities/eaifr.aspx). The

institute is newly created with a view to positioning itself as a
leading research and teaching

institute in Eastern Africa. The institute will grow to have at least 6
full time researchers and 8

postdoctoral fellows and a vibrant visiting scientists programme as well
hosting a number of

meetings every year. There is special focus on a Master in physics
programme with a view to the

development of a Ph.D. programme.

Currently the areas of interest are: Physics of the Solid Earth,
Condensed matter Physics and High Energy Physics.

Presently the institute has three scientific staff (including the
Director) two in the field of Condensed matter physics and one in
Astrophysics/Cosmology.

Potential future areas include space physics, climate change and
mathematics.

The institute is committed to diversity and aims for geographical and
gender balance.

*OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POSTS*

Under the supervision of the Director the incumbents will undertake
research in their research areas

and will assist and teach in the Masters programmes. Essential
responsibilities include:

§ Carry out research in their field.

§ Participate in the organization of the Master programme in Physics.

§ Teach at least two courses per annum in the Masters programme.

§ Supervise students and postdoctoral fellows at the institute.

§ Actively participate in the development and running of a Ph.D.
programme in

and to supervise and/or co-supervise Ph.D. students in their fields of
research.

§ Help organise workshops, meetings etc. that are held by the Institute
alone or in

collaboration with other international bodies, especially the ICTP.

§ Interface with research staff of the departments of Physics and
mathematics at UR and

with the ICTP.

§ To keep a collegiate atmosphere within the institute and with the
Physics and

Mathematics departments and the ICTP.

*REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

*Education:*

§ Ph.D. in Physics or in a related field.

*Work Experience:*

§ At least 4 years of relevant professional experience after obtaining
the doctorate. (2

years of which in an international environment is an asset.)

§ Experience in lecturing and organizing training activities. (This
experience in a developing country is an asset).

*Skills/Competencies:*

§ Ability to work in a multicultural environment as part of a team.

*Languages:*

§ Excellent knowledge of English.

*BENEFITS AND ENTITLEMENTS*

On successfully completing a probationary period of one year this post
becomes a permanent

position. The gross annual (expatriate) remuneration depends on the
actual post and will start

at $37,000 for Senior Lecturer, $40,500 for Associate Professor and
$44,000 for Professor.

The incumbents automatically have the status of ICTP Associate for 6
years, which allows them

to visit the relevant ICTP research group. The conditions for Associates
