Attending the IRIS Workshop? Please consider adding the Mini-Workshop on the SZ4D Initiative to your plans. It will be held before the main Workshop on Monday afternoon, to facilitate participation if you make travel plans to arrive in the morning, or are going on the morning field trip to Tent Rocks.

Participation is free and open to all, but pre-registration is required. To register, please use this form: https://goo.gl/forms/wWYCWzReU7GmAkYj1

Mini-Workshop on the SZ4D Initiative and Seismology
Monday, June 11th, 2018 from 1:00 - 6:00 pm
Albuquerque Convention Center

Conveners: Harold Tobin, Doug Wiens, Diego Melgar, and Anne Meltzer

Description:
Following the large Subduction Zone Observatory Workshop held in October, 2016 in Boise, a “Vision Document” was prepared outlining the concepts for a decadal-scale SZ4D Initiative (Subduction Zones in Four Dimensions). That report (www.iris.edu/sz4d) laid out a road map for a three year planning process for the broad subduction zone research community to develop concrete objectives and an implementation plan. In the past year, planning efforts have advanced through the submission of Research Coordination Network proposals to NSF and the planning of several workshops, all targeted at SZ4D topics. SZ4D targets the fundamental processes underlying all subduction-related hazards. This mini-workshop is intended as a forum for the exchange of information and new ideas about the role of seismology in this process and the prioritized goals of the seismological community for an SZ4D Initiative. Topics on the agenda will include a full update on SZ4D efforts to date, and in-depth discussion of key scientific themes including megathrust processes and integrated onshore-offshore observations, volcano seismology and geodesy, seismology related to surface processes such as landslides and lahars, and the development of international partnerships through SZ4D. Participants will be encouraged to bring their ideas about potential SZ4D projects for breakouts and lightning-round presentations.
