Dear Colleagues,

The Dublin Institute for Advanced Study invites applications for
a 4-year Ph.D. and a 1-year Postdoctoral positions in seismology.
The positions are in the seismology group at DIAS, which has a
broad research programme in regional and global seismic imaging,
waveform and array tomography and lithospheric dynamics.

The recent growth in the number of broadband seismic stations
around the world makes it possible to image the Earth’s interior
in unprecedented detail. This presents opportunities for exciting
new discoveries, relating to long-standing problems of basic
Earth science. In these PhD and Postdoctoral research projects,
the lithosphere and underlying mantle will be imaged using very
large datasets of surface-wave measurements, including the
fundamental and higher modes. The data will be related to Earth
structure using probabilistic seismic inversions and
computational-petrology inversions, targeting fundamental
problems of plate tectonics and lithospheric dynamics.

Ph.D. Studentship
-----------------

Duration: 4 years.
Stipend: €17,500 per year, tax free.
Start date: available now. Flexible.

New methods for automated surface-wave measurements can
produce large sets of very accurate, very broadband phase-velocity
data. In this project, the methods will be fine-tuned and applied
to Asia and surroundings, as well as other regions. The range
of problems that may be addressed includes the mechanisms
of continental convergence and mountain building (Tibet,
Pamir and elsewhere), origins of enigmatic intraplate volcanism
(western Mongolia and elsewhere), dynamics of the lithosphere
and its interactions with the convecting mantle beneath it.

Students at DIAS receive broad training in geophysics. While
focussing primarily on their research, they also attend many
short courses, workshops, international schools and major
conferences. PhD students in the seismology group have been
very successful in their research, publishing actively and
winning international and national awards for their work.

Applicants should have excellent/very good grades, preferably
an advanced degree (M.Sc. or equivalent), background in
geophysics, physics or mathematics and strong computing
skills, including programming. To apply, please e-mail a
complete academic CV, a statement of research interests,
English proficiency certification if applicable
(DIAS requirements are the same as those at UCD:
http://www.ucd.ie/international/study-at-ucd-global/ucdenglishlanguagerequirements/),
academic transcripts, and the names and contact details of
3 academic referees to Dr. Sergei Lebedev (sergei<at>cp.dias.ie),
with "seismology Ph.D. position" in the subject line.
Consideration of applications will begin immediately and
continue until the position is filled. For additional
information on the project or on studying at DIAS, please
contact Sergei Lebedev (sergei<at>cp.dias.ie).

Post-Doctoral position
----------------------

Duration: 1 year
Salary: €36,489 - €43,394, depending on experience and qualifications
Start date: as soon as possible

Understanding the evolution and dynamics of the lithospheric
plates requires knowledge of their structure, temperature
and thickness. The signal of these properties in seismic
data is subtle. Current tomography models map the large-scale
seismic velocity structure of the plates but the model
non-uniqueness still limits the inferences on the lithospheric
structure that can be made. This project will capitalize on the
resolving power of our group’s massive, recently assembled
global datasets (fundamental and higher mode Rayleigh and
Love waves) and on our recently developed seismic and
petrological inversion methods. The focus will be on the
application of the methods, targeting new insights into the
mechanisms of the lithospheric dynamics and evolution,
at scales from global to regional.

Qualifications: a PhD in geophysics or related field is required.
Substantial computing and programming experience and a
good command of English are essential. A publication record
commensurate with career stage is expected. Experience in
the seismic imaging of the lithosphere is desirable.

To apply: e-mail a complete academic CV, including a list of
publications, a statement of research interests, and the names
and contact details of 3 academic referees to Dr. Sergei
Lebedev (sergei<at>cp.dias.ie), with "Postdoctoral position"
in the subject line. Consideration of the applications will begin
immediately and continue until the position is filled.
For additional information on the project, please contact
Dr. Sergei Lebedev (sergei<at>cp.dias.ie).

DIAS is an equal opportunity employer.

I would appreciate your passing this on to anybody potentially
interested
in these opportunities.

Many thanks,

Sergei Lebedev
