Postdoctoral position in correlation wavefield seismology
Job no: 525019
Classification: Academic Level A
Salary Package: $70,107 - $88,446 per annum plus 17% Superannuation
Terms: Full-time, Fixed Term Appointment of two years
Position Overview:
We are looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow (Academic Level A) in observational/computational seismology in the Seismology and Mathematical Geophysics research group within the Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES) at the Australian National University (ANU). The applicants should have a PhD in Seismology and strong analytical and computational skills with a background in geophysics, physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, or related fields. Successful applicant will be joining a group of seismologists with interests in various aspects of global and regional seismology (both observational and theoretical) and mathematical geophysics, studying both Earth’s structure and seismic sources. There is some flexibility in the start date, but the candidate would need to commence their position sometime between August 2018 and February 2019.
The work will be focused on advancing the correlation wavefield seismology. The successful applicant will contribute towards the development of new methods, applications and research initiatives in this field, and assist in supervision of graduate or undergraduate students involved in this field of research. The tasks include one or more of;

1. extraction of earthquake waveforms from international stations generated by local, regional and teleseismic events;
2. pre-processing and analysis of waveform data in the context of earthquake coda and ambient noise autocorrelation and cross-correlation studies;
3. the interpretation of results, and (iv) active participation and contributions to the research group meetings and other outreach activities.
The overall goal of the project is to provide new source and structural information to improve current knowledge of Earth structure and dynamics.
As part of the Australian National University and located in Canberra, RSES has been ranked #1 in Australia and #9 in the world in Earth and Marine Sciences according to the QS World University Rankings 2018. The Australian National University is situated in the centre of the nation’s capital, Canberra, between a lake and a small mountain. Canberra is also a cultural heart of Australia, with the National Gallery of Australia, the High Court of Australia and the National Museum of Australia all a short distance from the city centre. The city is located about two hours drive from the South Coast beaches of New South Wales, about two hours drive to the Snowy Mountains and Mt Kosciusko ski fields, about three hours drive from Sydney, and about seven hours drive from Melbourne.
Beyond this two year appointment the opportunities exist for the successful individual to submit competitive fellowship bids and grant applications, and secure funding and employment with the University beyond two years.
