The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, at The Pennsylvania State University, invites applications for a post-doctoral research position in adapting deep learning methods for use in the earth sciences. This position will provide the successful candidate with experience conducting cross-cutting research working under the supervision of three faculty members Dr. Guido Cervone from the Dept. of Geography, Dr. Christelle Wauthier from the Dept. of Geosciences, and Dr. Melissa Gervais from the Dept. of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences. They will conduct collaborative research that will advance the use of deep learning within the earth sciences through its application to several scientific questions that require the identification of patterns of spatio-temporal variability. The successful candidate will have access to significant computing resources and be involved in the high performance computing activities of the Institute for CyberScience at Penn State. Applicants must hold a Ph.D in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Geoscience, Atmospheric Science, Geography or other related field with a strong Computational Science component. Experience with advanced programing, deep learning, or machine learning methods, an interest in conducting cross-cutting research, and a willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team is highly desired. This position will be funded for 18-months from the date of hire, with a strong possibility of refunding.
