The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon is hiring a Post-Doctoral Researcher for project STORM: Atmosphere - Ocean - Solid Earth Coupling, Seismic Tools to Explore and Monitor the Oceans.

Project STORM is a collaborative project with the Computational Engineering and Optimization Group group at UT Austin, with expertise in machine learning and big data techniques applied to geophysical inference problems. The project aims at using ocean and land-based seismic datasets, collected in and around the north Atlantic, both on the seafloor, ocean islands and margins, to study ocean processes and the internal structure of the Earth using microseismic noise. In particular, the post-doctoral workplan focuses on using seismic data to image ocean storms, validating the results against state-of-the-art meteorological reanalysis, and assessing the impact of the results for ocean and climate studies.

The host institution, Instituto Dom Luiz, is an Associate Laboratory based at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, Portugal, with a wide research agenda in Earth and Environmental Sciences. IDL's core mission focuses on the use of quantitative science to unravel our Planet’s Dynamics and to respond to major societal challenges posed by Climate Change, to promote a sustainable use of Earth and Energy Resources, and exposure to Natural Hazards. IDL’s research includes and combines analytical studies, big data analysis, observational activities, and modelling, spanning from geological to human timescales. As an integrated Earth System Science institute, IDL actively promotes cross-discipline interactions from fields as diverse as Geology, Geodesy, Solid Earth Geophysics, Physical Oceanography, Hydrology, Meteorology and Climate, Environmental Science and Engineering.
