Research Assistant Professor

Seismological Laboratory, Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, Caltech

The Seismological Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) seeks outstanding candidates for a non-tenure track Research Assistant Professor position in seismology. The successful candidate will: 1) conduct cutting edge research using regional seismic data to understand earth processes, especially earthquakes, 2) participate in the leadership team to facilitate operations and continued development of the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) to maintain its status as a premier seismic network and resource to the scientific community as well as the public, and 3) participate in communicating earthquake information to the media and the public.

The Caltech Seismological Laboratory is internationally recognized for excellence in geophysical research, and has a distinguished history of leadership in developing science to serve the public interest. With over 350 high-quality seismic stations, the SCSN is an integrated part of the Caltech Seismological Laboratory since the 1920s. The SCSN is the southern California portion of the California Integrated Seismic Network, and is part of the Advanced National Seismic System. The network is a co-operative project of Caltech and the U.S. Geological Survey, and is one of the founding networks that develops, and contributes to, the operations of the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning system. The SCSN and its operation are evolving towards a cutting edge big data environment as new sensing technologies and data mining methods emerge.

Candidates should have an excellent research record in observational seismology, and we welcome applicants with experience in traditional seismic network operations as well as expertise in new data collection methods and analysis techniques. Candidates will be evaluated on their research record, management experience, and communication skills. The term of a non-tenure track Research Assistant Professor can be six total years, with appointment contingent upon completion of a PhD in a relevant field. Interested applicants should submit an electronic application that includes a brief cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, statement of experience in network management, and contact information for three individuals who may be contacted for letters of reference to https://applications.caltech.edu/jobs/seismo. For full consideration, please apply by May 31, 2019.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
