Dear Colleagues,

The Dublin Institute for Advanced Study invites applications for
one 4-year Ph.D. and two Postdoctoral positions in seismology.
The positions are in the seismology group at DIAS, with a broad,
active research programme in regional and global seismic imaging,
waveform and array tomography and lithospheric dynamics.

The positions are part of the project SEA-SEIS
(www.sea-seis.ie) that has deployed broadband, ocean-bottom
seismometers across a vast area in the North Atlantic Ocean, giving
the successful candidates an opportunity to participate in the
retrieval cruise.

The recent growth in the number of broadband seismic stations
around the world makes it possible to image the Earth’s interior
in unprecedented detail. This presents opportunities for exciting
new discoveries, offering solutions to long-standing problems of
basic Earth science. In these PhD and Postdoctoral research
projects, the lithosphere and underlying mantle will be imaged
using very large surface- and S-wave datasets. The data will be
related to Earth structure using seismic and computational-petrology
inversions, targeting fundamental problems of plate tectonics and
lithospheric dynamics.

The research projects are on waveform tomography and array
tomography, at the North Atlantic and global scales. Advances in
tomography methods will be implemented and applied. Scientific
targets of the research include the structure and evolution of the
lithosphere and underlying mantle, in the North Atlantic and globally,
the origins of the enigmatic North Atlantic Igneous Province
volcanism, the deep structure of the Iceland Hotspot and its
effect on the evolution of the region.

Ph.D. Studentship
-----------------
Duration: 4 years
Stipend: €18,500 per year, tax free.
Start date: 1 June, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter (flexible).

The new data created in this project, used together with all other
available broadband data, will improve the resolution of tomographic
imaging in the entire N Atlantic and globally. Relationships between
seismic waveforms and temperature, density and composition of the
rock at depth will be formulated and used in the inversions. The
applications of the improved imaging methods will enhance our
understanding of the structure and dynamics of the lithosphere and
underlying mantle globally.

Students at DIAS receive broad training in geophysics through short
courses, workshops, and attendance at international schools and
major conferences. The group is very international and known for its
lively, friendly atmosphere. PhD students in the DIAS seismology
group have been very successful in their research, publishing actively
and winning international and national awards for their work.

Applicants should have excellent/very good grades, preferably an
advanced degree (M.Sc. or equivalent), background in geophysics,
physics or mathematics and strong computing skills, including
programming. To apply, please e-mail a complete academic CV, a
statement of research interests, English proficiency certification
if applicable (DIAS requirements are the same as those at UCD:
http://www.ucd.ie/international/study-at-ucd-global/ucdenglishlanguagerequirements/),
academic transcripts, and the
names and contact details of 3 academic referees to
Dr. Sergei Lebedev (sergei<at>cp.dias.ie), with "seismology Ph.D.
position" in the subject line. Consideration of applications
will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
