Dear Colleagues,

The application is now open to attend a workshop to develop an Urban and Environmental Geophysics course, June 4-5 2019 in Tampa, FL. Please find information and the application on the website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/workshops/2019/04/urban_environmental_geophysics_course_planning_workshop

The workshop will be focused on planning for the development of an introductory undergraduate class on Urban and Environmental Geophysics – once vetted, the course materials will be made widely available for the community to use. We invite professors and teaching professionals from a broad range of institutions, especially those that serve underrepresented minorities. The motivation for bringing a workshop group together to develop and share course materials related to Urban and Environmental Geophysics is to:
-Engage a broader audience of students, especially underrepresented minorities, in geophysics topics early in their careers
-Generate excitement through research-proven teaching methods and hands-on activities about geophysics-related careers
-Learn about existing course materials and research/field experiences for students, including a demonstration of field equipment, to engage students who may not have an opportunity to be exposed to geophysics concepts

The workshop is hosted by the University of South Florida, and funded by NSF through the SAGE facility operated by the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS). The workshop will be led by Sarah Kruse (USF), Lee Slater (Rutgers - Newark), Andy Parsekian (UWyo), John Taber (IRIS) and Danielle Sumy (IRIS).

All costs related to participation in the workshop will be covered for ~25 attendees including up to two (2) nights lodging (June 3rd and 4th; coordinated by workshop organizers) and $500 in travel related expenses (airfare, taxis, parking, etc.). Interested in hearing more about this exciting opportunity, and/or providing feedback about what you think such a course should include? If you have not done so already, please fill out our pre-workshop survey here: https://goo.gl/forms/L8BRvV7xXdm4Xlga2

Thank you!

On behalf of the Urban and Environmental Geophysics Team
