About the Organization:
The National Facility for Seismic Imaging (NFSI) is funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to establish a major new facility of Broad Band Ocean Bottom Seismometers (BBOBS) that will be used across Canada and globally for studies of offshore structures and related geohazards like earthquakes and tsunamis. Dalhousie University, internationally recognized as one of Canada’s leading research institutions, is home to the headquarters of the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI; www.dal.ca/ofi) located in the Steele Ocean Sciences Building (SOSB), a state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to ocean studies.

Job Summary:
Reporting to the NFSI Project Lead, the Facility Manager will be responsible for the management and operations of the NFSI. This will include assisting the Project Lead in the development and implementation of the NFSI project management plan and the development of financial and operational reports. The Facility Manager will oversee the contract for initial production and testing of the BBOBS, followed by the management of their subsequent use on research projects. As part of these operations, they will supervise various support staff, including Instrumentation and Data Technologists, and provide advice to facility users regarding logistical requirements for their research projects.

Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise 2-4 NFSI technical staff within the NFSI lab and in the field.
- Promote the NFSI and the use of its instrumentation. Manage requests for NFSI instrumentation, including negotiations of contracts.
- Oversee and support the execution of the day-by-day operations and maintenance of NFSI instrumentation, both in the lab and in the field. Develop specifications and procure NFSI instrumentation via proper processes.
- Liaise with academia, government, industry partners as well as Dalhousie University central services and respond to requests for information from the media.
- Prepare progress and financial reports, including for the governance committees and the CFI.
- Coordinate and prepare documentation for governance committee meetings; perform administrative duties for the management of the NFSI, as necessary.

Note:
-Must be able to lift 20 kg and possess or be able to obtain a valid Nova Scotia drivers license.
-Approximately 25% of time will be spent performing fieldwork, which will occur mostly aboard vessels. Flexibility in time is required due to the nature of fieldwork. Exposure to harsh conditions could be possible due to the nature of fieldwork

Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree with certificate in ocean technology with approximately 5-7 years related sea-going experience with preparation and use of autonomous data acquisition instrumentation (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience) is required. Experience in marine seismological studies preferred. Demonstrated experience supervising and managing staff is required. Ability to work at sea, as well as pass a physical examination for MED A3 training is required. Must possess strong attention to detail and attention to safety protocols to ensure processes are followed. Excellent interpersonal and communication (both written and oral) skills are required to build effective relationships with stakeholders. Demonstrated ability of excellent judgment and analytical skills are required. Must be able to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
