Two of the largest earthquakes to strike southern California in two decades occurred on July 4 and 5, 2019, near the towns of Ridgecrest and Trona.

In Thursday's webinar, Dr. Richard Allen (Berkeley Seismology Laboratory) and Dr. Eric Fielding (Jet Propulsion Laboratory), will discuss several aspects of the Ridgecrest earthquakes. Richard will summarize the performance of the ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system. While the geophysical detection networks performed well and an alert was generated, the public across southern California was disappointed by the lack of an alert. Eric will summarize research at JPL that is providing precise information about how much the ground moved in different locations in response to the earthquakes using data from satellites. The two scientists will share their results and some immediate lessons learned with time at the end of the webinar for questions from the listening audience.
