The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is seeking a Staff Associate to
work with our International Research Institute for Climate and Society’s
successful and growing team. In accordance with the International
Research Institute for Climate and Society’s mission, which is to
enhance society’s capability to understand anticipate and manage the
impacts of climate in order to improve human welfare, especially in
developing countries, the responsibilities of this position will be to
advance research in integrating climate information (monitoring and
forecast) into applications for natural disasters and emergencies,
within the humanitarian sector, in particular for floods, which will
benefit IRI’s partner community (e.g. International Federation of Red
Cross and Red Crescent and NASA).
*Duties & Responsibilities include:*
• Conduct research in integrating climate information into applications
for mapping and forecasting floods, in particular flash-floods – and
engage with the humanitarian sector on how this information can be used
for early action. May guide short-term research assistants on
preliminary data analysis and reporting.
• Interact with user communities to help respond to the data needs
of IRI partners, using various types of climate and weather information,
from various sources (including, but not limited to the IRI Data
Library, ArcGIS, Google Earth Engine and Maprooms
(http://iridl.ldeo.columbia.edu/mapr/). This work will include using the
Ingrid programming language and communicating with key partners
(e.g. NASA and Red Cross) to integrate remotely-sensed data from Earth
Observations (e.g. from NASA and European Space Agency) with
socioeconomic vulnerability data from various sources.
• Perform project/proposal related tasks such as reporting, monitoring
and meeting deliverable timelines.
• Assist in development of materials for workshops and capacity-building
trainings under supervision of Senior Staff Associate at different
national and international events, training in other countries, at
conferences, symposiums and workshops. This will include supporting
partners to interact and work with their in-country hydrometeorological
departments.
• Assist in documentation of research findings, status, and processes.
• Assist in writing code as directed in support of projects.
• Support the coordination with English-speaking and potentially French
and Spanish speaking partners, relevant IRI staff, and stakeholders,
involving management of communications, meetings, organization of events
and field trips, as directed by Senior Staff Associate.
• Will receive general supervision from the Senior Staff Associate. Will
exercise independent judgement within parameters set by the Senior Staff
Associate. Will not supervise others.
*Qualifications & Requirements:*
• Bachelor’s Degree in Climate Science, Meteorology, Hydrology,
Environmental Policy, Data Science, Statistics, Geographic Information
Systems, or a related discipline and four years of relevant experience
required; or a Master’s degree in Climate Science, Meteorology,
Hydrology, Environmental Policy, Data Science, Statistics, Geographic
Information Systems, or a related discipline and two years of relevant
experience required.
• Experience in Climate Science, Meteorology, Hydrology, Environmental
Policy, Data Science, Statistics, Geographic Information Systems,
Disaster Management or related field preferred.
• Strong knowledge of English is required.
• Knowledge of French or Spanish preferred.
• Prior experience with mapping of environmental variables, forecasting
of floods and/or other extreme weather events, and/or data science
related to environmental and/or disaster policy or related climate risk
projects required, whether through employment, coursework for degree, or
via student internship.
• Successful candidate should also possess superior writing skills.
• Experience with analysis software, such as QGIS and R is required.
• Familiarity with IRI Data Library desired.
• Work experience in Climate Science, Meteorology, Hydrology,
Environmental Policy, Data Science, Statistics, Geographic Information
Systems, Geophysical-related Early Warning Systems, and Disaster
Management desired. Good personal communication skills required.
• Aptitude/ experience working with stakeholders in developing countries
preferred.
