We are seeking a Postdoc to work with a multi-disciplinary team aimed at improving this nation’s capabilities for monitoring underground nuclear explosions anywhere in the world. Your work will focus on data analysis and computational geophysics. You will initially support existing department R&D efforts, but, over time, you may have opportunities to apply your expertise to development of new R&D efforts within Sandia mission areas.

Department Description:
We advance analysis and algorithms for remote sensing support of the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System (USNDS), Nuclear Effects for Survivability and Consequence Management, and Nuclear Forensics. Missions such as treaty verification, non-proliferation and nuclear force management, with respect to nuclear detonation detection, are supported by our modeling and software products using optical, particle (NGX), and radio-frequency phenomenologies. We serve as a laboratories R&D resource for nuclear signatures modeling, simulation, and analysis expertise.

Required:
• PhD in Geophysics, or closely related discipline
Desired:
• Publications in scientific peer-reviewed journals
• Research experience in the one or more of the following technical fields: computational geophysics; seismology; infrasound; inverse theory, modeling and optimization, including full waveform inversion; uncertainty quantification, mathematical geophysical analysis; continuum mechanics; geophysical signal processing; compressive sensing; processing and analysis of field-collected data sets; computational physics; machine learning
• Experience in computer programming related to waveform processing and numerical computation for research applications
• Strong organizational, written, oral, and presentation skills, including the ability effectively communicate scientific/engineering concepts and results at multiple levels (highly technical to general audience)
• Ability to work effectively both individually and on teams
• Proficiency with at least one computer programming language (FORTRAN, Java, C, C++, Python, MATLAB)
Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
