The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) and the Seismological Society of America (SSA) are pleased to announce the 19th year of this jointly-sponsored national public lecture series in seismology. The selection committee seeks nominations from the seismological community for two lecturers for calendar year 2021.

The goal of the program is to increase the general public’s awareness of recent earthquake science discoveries, and the relevance of seismology to understanding our planet and to benefit society. The general scope of the research presented must have clear and acknowledged tie-ins to SSA and IRIS. During the lectureship year, each of the two speakers will present a non-technical talk up to four times to general public audiences. The presentations will take place at science museums, universities or similar settings as part of the venue’s established public speaker series.

Each lecture averages 30-45 minutes in length, depending on the venue, with a typical program lasting about one hour including time for audience questions. IRIS Education and Public Outreach and SSA will cover travel costs and assist with scheduling, logistics, and other related expenses. Each lecturer will also receive a $1000 honorarium. Lecturers must reside in the US during 2021.

Nominations must include a lecture title, a short paragraph describing the lecture, a few sentences addressing why the topic would be of interest to general public audiences, and several examples of nominee's experience sharing seismological concepts with the general public. Nominees with past experience successfully communicating seismological concepts to large public audiences are of interest.

Self-nominations are encouraged. Former IRIS/SSA Distinguished Lectureship speakers may be nominated and considered if her/his selection was more than 10 years ago (2010 or earlier).

For full consideration, nominations must be submitted no later than Friday, February 7, 2020. Please email nominations to Perle Dorr (dorr<at>iris.edu) with the subject line “Speaker Series Nomination".
