In 2016, the University of Calgary was awarded $75 million over seven years from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) for its initiative entitled: Global Research Initiative in Sustainable Low carbon Unconventional Resources. The goal of this research is to dramatically reduce the impact of energy extraction and production on the environment. As part of the implementation of the GRI scientific strategy we are looking to fill two Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) positions in applications of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) methods for unconventional hydrocarbon development, within Theme 2 of GRI Tight Oil and Gas.
We seek applications from qualified and motivated scientists with a passion for optimizing hydrocarbon recovery and interdisciplinary research to fill the following positions.
Job Description:
This project aims to use combined passive seismic monitoring together with Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) observations to achieve a better understanding of dynamic interaction between hydraulic fracturing growth and bedding plane/fracture/fault systems. Both PDFs will work under supervision of Professor David Eaton. The PDF candidates will be expected to apply a high level of expertise in processing, interpretation and simulation of DAS observations, with a particular focus on applications to the surveillance of hydraulic fracturing and seismicity. Publication of peer-reviewed papers in high-impact scientific journals is an expectation of this position.
Qualifications:
-Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in geophysics or a related field
-Strong communication capabilities with proactive attitude
-Expertise is sought in a combination of the following areas: seismology, geomechanics, geophysical signal processing, proficiency in scientific programing. Strength in 2 or 3 of these areas are expected. It is up to the applicant to demonstrate these strengths
-Ability to initiate and develop original scientific research projects
-In addition, the successful candidates will have outsanding research track records as evidenced by journal of conference publications
-Previous experience with DAS data processing and interpretation is an asset
-An interest in commercialization is a requirement for one of the positions
Appointments will be for 2 years with a $55,000/year stipend. The successful candidate will be required to work within a team environment, so excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of interdisciplinary researchers is a must.
