Dear Colleagues:

UNAVCO is approaching the end of the 2016-2020 strategic plan, engaging in
integration negotiations with IRIS, and awaiting changes to the NSF grant
requirements. Each of these changes is an opportunity to revisit the
priorities of our facility and the community that it serves.

In this context, UNAVCO leadership has begun a refresh of its existing
strategy. The updates will guide us through the next three to four years,
including shaping the priorities and non-negotiables of the integration
negotiations with IRIS, informing our current operations and activities,
and helping to make our proposal for a future geophysical facility
compelling and responsive to community needs.

In January, our board and senior staff participated in a strategy retreat,
during which we confirmed UNAVCO’s mission, vision, and the organizational
strengths that have been critical to our success. We also examined the
priorities articulated by the research community, relevant trends affecting
our work, and competitors in our field. The outcome of the retreat was a
draft of five priority areas for the next three to four years.

The priorities are *not* meant to capture everything UNAVCO does, but to
indicate those areas we view as strategic to positioning UNAVCO for the
immediate future. Staff and volunteers serving on UNAVCO committees
provided additional input on the draft priorities in January. We refined
them and now welcome feedback from the UNAVCO community. After reviewing
the public comments, the board will adopt the final strategic priorities
and task staff with developing the operational and resource allocation
plans to implement them.

We greatly value your input and invite you to review the draft priorities
and complete a brief survey. The survey should take approximately 10–15
minutes to complete. Access the survey here
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YM2NPX2. Your response by March 16th is
appreciated.

Thank you,
Dr. Lucy Flesch, UNAVCO Board of Directors, Chair
Dr. Rebecca Bendick, UNAVCO President
