All,

Happy Friday everyone! Here is our fifth seismology mini-investigation to
support those of you leading e-learning as a result of stay-at-home orders!

This week’s lab builds on the learning from prior weeks as students will
explore how earthquakes move the ground in three-components of motion… and
how that motion is recorded by modern seismographs (Vertical, N-S, and E-W
motion). Students will explore how and why we identify P and S wave
arrivals on particular components of motion (e.g. channels). Students will
also learn how other factors influence the shape of the seismograms. We
had initially intended to only make 2 parts to reading seismograms… but we
couldn’t help ourselves so this is Part 3 of 2.
