Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!
Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for a Computational Seismologist to develop and apply advanced computational seismology methods to non-proliferation and national security problems. We are seeking an individual with the quantitative skills and experience to work with a team of geophysicists and developers in applying these methods to a variety of multi-disciplinary monitoring problems in the Geophysical Monitoring Program (GMP). You will report to the Seismology Group Leader and the Program Leaders. This position is in the Seismology Group within the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division (AEED).

This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Conduct original and independent research and development in computational seismology and/or computational geophysics.
- Apply advanced computational seismology methods to non-proliferation and national security projects in the Geophysical Monitoring Program (GMP).
- Work as part of an interdisciplinary scientific team of geophysicists and developers to accomplish research goals, design and implement research projects, and coordinate program requirements and deliverables for sponsors and customers.
- Organize, analyze, and manipulate large geophysical data sets from global networks, numerical simulations and ongoing field operations, including data retrieval, storage, access, metadata, and quality control.
- Collaborate with the GMP team to help maintain and improve the LLNL Seismic Research Database (SRDB) in support of a variety of research programs related to non-proliferation, national and energy security.
- Present results at program meetings and scientific research conferences, prepare programmatic reports, and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

IN ADDITION AT THE SES.4 LEVEL
- Lead and coordinate a team of geophysicists and programmers, including directing technical work and providing programmatic supervision.
- Lead research proposals and program execution from the Seismology Group and team members.
- Work on a variety of seismic monitoring problems using advanced forward and inverse methods and innovative numerical modeling tools.

Qualifications
- Ph.D. in seismology, geophysics or associated field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience with seismological and geophysical methods for characterizing the subsurface.
- Significant experience applying computational seismology to multi-disciplinary, non-proliferation projects, including explosion monitoring.
- Advanced knowledge of seismic and other geophysical data including infrasound, hydroacoustic, geodetic, and imagery.Experience collecting, processing and analyzing local/regional seismic data, and proficiency in organizing and analyzing large databases of waveforms, events, amplitudes, and arrivals.
- Significant experience with various computational methods including high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, data intensive computing and/or machine learning techniques.
- Collaborative programming skills (Java, C/C++, Python, SQL, Matlab, Perl, scripts), and experience with heterogeneous computing and development environments (Mac/PC/UNIX/LINUX platforms).
- Experience with modern computational infrastructures, including enterprise-level relational databases, large scale analytical platforms up to and including HPC, and large data storage repositories.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

IN ADDITION AT THE SES.4 LEVEL
- Substantial and advanced subject matter expertise in seismology and other geophysical methods, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.
- Significant experience with project management, including proposal writing, budgeting, staffing, and resource allocation.
- Significant experience with seismic monitoring applications, operations, forward and inverse modeling of subsurface problems, wave propagation modeling, and numerical methods including finite difference, finite volume, and/or finite element techniques.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
